Roger and June Skinner were given the trio of special occasions from each of their daughters.

They began at Amberley Castle last Friday, on the golden anniversary of their wedding, and continued with a meal the next day followed by a get-together at Hungerford for all 15 members of their family including three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Mrs Skinner said: “It was a weekend to remember. A marriage is all about give and take. That’s the whole point about it.”

The couple met when she was walking along Bognor seafront with a friend and Mr Skinner stopped in his car with one of his friends. Their friends got together and they followed. They were married a year later in the Methodist Church.

Mrs Skinner, 71, who was born in Yapton, worked in Sherry’s sweetshop and tobacconist in Linden Road.

Mr Skinner, 76, was born in Kenilworth Road in Bognor. He worked at Hago in Bognor for 12 years and moved to Lec Refrigeration for another nine years in its maintenance department before he became a taxi driver.

He also ran the 39 Youth Club in its original location in Den Avenue for several years after his parents had started the club.

Mr and Mrs Skinner moved into the new housing on West Meads - with the cost of £3,695 for a three bed house - when they married and have lived in Durlston Drive for nearly 16 years.

“They also used to say time drags when you are retired, but it doesn’t do that at all, ” said Mr Skinner.

After a major operation for Mr Skinner, the couple regularly attend a monthly club at the Chestnuts Centre in Bognor town centre for people who have had heart surgery.
