Time capsule gives taste of Bognor Regis life in 2009

Memories of two Bognor Regis schools have been captured in a capsule for future pupils to enjoy.

The aspects of life in The Glade Infant and Michael Ayres Junior schools are buried in the centre of the courtyard of their replacement school.

The items were placed in a capsule by four pupils from Michael Ayres with help from seven youngsters from The Glade.

Ella Porter, ten, Amy Hackett, 11, Josh Connelly, eight, and James Meers, nine, from Michael Ayres told the small crowd of those involved with the schools' past and present.

"We hope this collection of mementoes will give an insight into life in a primary school at the beginning of the 21st century to whoever eventually discovers it."

Last Friday's ceremony marked the halfway stage in the building of the new school to replace The Glade and Michael Ayres.

Mark Tant, the managing director of the contractor Willmott Dixon, said: "We often have a topping-out ceremony at this stage but we thought it would be good to bury a time capsule. The capsule will be buried for many years. Some very interesting things have gone into it."

A plaque stating the capsule's presence will be installed in the school near its location.

Building work on the 9.5m West Sussex County Council-funded school is due to be completed in mid-December.

Both The Glade and Michael Ayres chose items for the capsule. Those from The Glade included a badge, a hat, a brass plate from its opening in the 1950s, a mini school thesaurus, a copy of its code of honour

and DVDs of school plays. Michael Ayres' contribution featured mainly photographs to provide a snapshot of its current activities. Pictures of recent school outings have also been included.
