Time for a tug o’war battle in Selsey

The hugely-popular service usually held on the Lifeboat Green had to decamp to St Peter’s Church, in Selsey, on July 26 because of the torrential downpours.

Nevertheless, it was standing-room only, marking another successful start to the vital fundraising week for the Selsey lifeboat team.

“It went extremely well,” said Colvin Rae, chairman of the RNLI Selsey Lifeboat Station Branch.

“Unfortunately we had to exchange the venue from the group from the green to St Peter’s Church.”

He said the event was still ‘enjoyed by everyone’.

This was followed by the lifeboat station throwing open its doors.

“On Monday’s open evening we were blessed with good weather and we had an excellent turnout and lots of interest from adult and children,” said Colvin.

This was followed on Tuesday night by the walking treasure hunt, which saw a turnout of 144 walkers and ten dogs.

“We had an excellent evening,” said Colvin. “The results will be published on Facebook and on our website.”

The week’s major two events are still to come – the tug o’war and fireworks display tonight (July 31) at 7pm on Lifeboat Green, following the dog show at 5.30pm.

This will be followed on Sunday by the celebrated raft race near the lifeboat station.

Colvin has also repeated his appeal for anyone wanting to help the lifeboat to get in touch.

“You don’t have to step aboard a lifeboat to help save lives at sea,” he said.

“You can help by fundraising or by joining our fundraising teams in Selsey and Chichester. If you’re interested please contact 07811 217633.”
