Toddling for Tyler in Pagham

The 43 members of Pagham Playgroup completed two laps of the perimeter of the pitch of the football club to raise money for Tyler Rankin.

Four-year-old Tyler has cerebral palsy affecting all four limbs.

He was due to join in the fun of the sponsored toddle, but a serious epileptic fit four days earlier meant he was still being looked after in hospital at the time. He has since recovered and is back home.

Playgroup leader Jean Powell said: "I told the children to think about Tyler as they were going round the pitch.

"He has been a member of the playgroup for about 15 months. He is a lovely chap and so happy.

"He gets involved with our activities and loves playing with the other children. They enjoy playing with him as well."

Early indications showed the toddlers raised 25-30 each on average.

A quarter of the total proceeds will be given to Tyler's parents, who live on the Pagham Beach estate, to buy equipment to make his life easier.

"It will probably be used for night-time equipment," said Mrs Powell. "There are lots and lots of things that can help Tyler which are not provided on the NHS."

The remains of the sponsorship is being donated to the children's charity, Barnado's.

Several toddles for the charity have been held by the playgroup along the promenade. But the Nyetimber Lane football club, which is opposite the group's meeting place, was chosen for an alternative location.
