Top historiansheading to Rye

Many of the country’s leading historians will be heading to Rye in October when the town hosts the latest in a series of conferences on the medieval age.

The events have helped place Rye firmly on the academic map.

This year’s conference has the rather macabre theme of ‘Hazards of life and Causes of Death in Late Medieval England’.

To help promote the event, Rye Studio School student Jordan Seabrook produced a water-colour painting depicting a sinister figure wearing a plague doctor’s mask which will be used by Rye Museum to advertise it.

Museum director Heather Stevenson said: “The 5th Rye Medieval Conference is to be held at Rye College on October 18.

“Academics are to present papers on their latest research at the conference, before publication.

“Delegates come from all over Britain and abroad, many to stay in Rye for several days.”

Professors from the Universities of Cambridge, East Anglia, Winchester and University College London will be presenting on such topics as: Poky pigges and stynkynge makerels’: Food Standards and Urban Health in Late Medieval England.

Other lectures include: An Archaeology of Disease: The Black Death: Fact or Fiction?
