Town leisure facilities receive a £20k boost

Up to £20,000 has been agreed to help improve leisure facilities in Battle.

Rother District Council will pay 50 per cent of the cost of a new multi-use games area (MUGA) located at the recreation ground.

Cabinet agreed the funds at its meeting on Monday (July 26).

The facility will provide an area for five-a-side football and basketball.

The existing basketball courts it will be built on are in poor condition.

Part of the funding agreement is the MUGA will meet the minimum standards for the type of facility set down by Sports England and the Sports and Play Contractors Association.

Battle Town Council has already allocated 10,000 towards the project and further funding is being applied for.

The news follows soon after the opening of a new play park at the recreation ground, created with Rother support, and a car park paid for through the district council's community grant scheme.

Rother District Council member for culture, sport and leisure, Deirdre Williams, said: "We are delighted to support this scheme and provide greater leisure facilities for the town."

Local member Cllr Kathryn Field said: "This is a much-needed and exciting facility in an area which is being developed as a sports hub in the town."
