Toxic Climping pond fears quashed by council

During a meeting at Climping Village Hall on Friday evening (October 25), about 50 villagers heard the results of an independent investigation into material unearthed during a conservation project, at the pond at the western end of Horsemere Green Lane.
Councillor James Baird had raised the initial concerns about the harmful substance last week, which tests confirmed was brown asbestos, amosite.

He said concerns had been raised by locals about walking past the soil and material dredged up from the pond as part of the conservation work.
“This is only a very small amount of asbestos,” he said. “Asbestos is only a risk if it is dry. That’s when the fibres can be breathed in.
“At the moment the area is still wet so it’s a very low risk.”

It is hoped the area can be turned into a treasured amenity asset for villagers, similar to those in Slindon and Walberton.
The council is keen to hear from volunteers who could assist with the work. To find out how to help, email [email protected]
