An investigation will be launched by the Environment Agency after conservation work at the duck pond, in Horsemere Green Lane, revealed a potentially harmful substance believed to be asbestos.

The concerns were raised by councillor James Baird.

A public meeting will be held tomorrow (Friday, October 25) to discuss the issue.

Cllr Baird said: “There’s rubble and glass and other items in the pond and what I suspect is asbestos.

“We need to be very careful. When you consider there has been fly-tipping in the pond, it has the potential to be harmful.”

Council chairman Terry Hockley said: “We have got to treat it seriously and we have to investigate this fully. It’s highly possible that for 50 years people living in the caravan site near the pond have been dumping materials into it. So it’s our responsibility, as a parish council, to look into these claims.”

The meeting will take place at Climping Village Hall, at 8pm.
