Traders in talks on parking fees in Bognor

Business owners in Bognor Regis town centre have been invited to a crucial meeting about parking charges.

Town and district councillors has arranged the session with Arun District Council for 6.30pm on March 4 at the town hall.

He hopes to get Arun's councillor responsible for car parks, Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, and Colin Rogers, the council's resources director, present. If they are unable to go ahead, they should send representatives.

Invitations are being sent by Cllr Wells to Bognor's Chamber of Commerce as well as the local branch of the Federation of Small Businesses. Individual company owners are also welcome to attend.

Cllr Wells said: "Anyone with a business in the town who wants to take part in this important conversation about parking charges should come along.

"There's a danger that increasing parking charges will stop local people coming into the town.

"I don't think they will have much of an effect on tourists, because they will have already driven to the town anyway.

"But it will be local people who will be going elsewhere because they don't want to pay the extra money."

The Observer previously revealed that Arun wants to raise charges at its town centre car parks by up to 18 per cent from April. That would see annual permits for the Fitzleet multi-storey car park increase from 88 to 100.

Charges at other locations are set to increase from 65p to 70p for an hour's stay at Regis Centre and Hothamton car parks and 50p to 55p in London Road.

Cllr Wells said the meeting would also feature the prospects for the regeneration of the town in the current economic climate.
