Traffic damage to castle walls

People are angry about speeding lorries and cars.

Children and pensioners have to watch out for cars zooming along Pevensey High Street.

Residents also say the castle has been damaged by heavy goods lorries scraping its walls.

Pauline Turner, from Castle Terrace, has organised a petition calling for changes to the traffic system.

She said: 'Twice my car has been hit.

'Our wing mirrors get snapped off by vehicles trying to go three-abreast.

'Sometimes speeding cars go through the traffic lights on the High Street.

'I have heard that the authorities won't do anything about it until somebody is killed or injured.'

Mrs Turner has seen lorry drivers chatting on their mobile phones as their lorries damage the castle walls.

A spokesman for English Heritage said: 'Pevensey Castle wall has been inspected by English Heritage's technical engineer and there a couple of grazes on the protruding towers next to the road.

'However the marks are very slight and there is no significant damage to the historic fabric but we will continue to monitor the situation.'

Other traffic issues raised by residents include noise and pollution, inadequate road signs and vibrations causing building damage.

A bypass from Pevensey roundabout to Stone Cross was originally built to take traffic away from Pevensey.

But Mrs Turner believes sat nav systems are guiding vehicles through the village as a short-cut.

She would like clearer road signs diverting traffic back onto the bypass.

Mrs Turner has now collected nine A4 pages of villagers' signatures asking authorities to tackle the traffic problem.
