Transport theme for Sands of Time festival in Bognor

Seaside transport is the theme of this year's Sands of Time along Bognor Regis seafront this weekend.

Two, three, four and even seven-wheel methods of getting around will be to the fore on Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19.

The activity will again stretch along the promenade from the bandstand, past the pier and up to the Royal Norfolk Hotel.

There will be plenty to enjoy for young and old alike in the town council-organised fun.

Council events officer Sue Holmes said: "New for this year is a get cycling roadshow on Saturday.

"There is a great opportunity for both children and adults to try out their cycling skills at the get cycling bike try-out roadshow. This will include 16 KMX recumbent tricycles and a seven-seater Circlecycle."

Former helicopter engineer Barry Smith, the founder of KMX, is delighted some of his trikes are touring Britain.

"We aim to provide anyone who wants to cycle with a safe and sound product which offers excellent value for money and, above all, a great deal of fun," he said.

More conventional transport will be seen when classic and vintage cars parade through the town mid-morning on Sunday, before parking along the Esplanade or in the grounds of the Royal Norfolk Hotel for visitors to admire close-up.

In keeping with the theme, the local model railway club will be staging an exhibition of layouts in the marquee in Waterloo Square. The ever-popular open-top bus rides begin at midday in the square on Sunday.

Other activities include displays and exhibitions in Waterloo Square, a charity fair on the seafront on Saturday and a craft fair at the Royal Norfolk Hotel on Sunday.

There will be lots for children to do, with transport themed craft workshops taking place on Saturday in the grounds of the Royal Norfolk Hotel. They will also host giant garden games and face painting.

There will be Punch and Judy on Saturday and a circus skills workshop on Sunday.

Pottery painting will be available on both days. Registration for the sandcastle competition on Sunday, 1 entry, will begin at 12.30pm.

There is a top prize of 60 for the children's competition and 100 for the adult/family section.
