A27: Roadworks causing traffic chaos in East Sussex to last until end of November

Roadworks on the A27 which have caused significant disruption on Thursday (October 15) are expected to last until the end of November.

Temporary traffic lights are in place on the A27 Lewes Road near Polegate while electrical works take place.

The works, which began on Wednesday (October 14) at 4pm, are due to last until November 30 at 5am, according to one.network.

An alert from AA Traffic News, first reported at 5:51am, read: “Queueing traffic on A27 Lewes Road both ways at Gainsborough Lane.

“Congestion to Wilmington eastbound (two miles), the Polegate Bypass is back to the Cop Hall Roundabout, and half a mile back down Eastbourne Road in the roadworks area.”

Lewes MP James MacCleary said he has been in ‘urgent’ contact with National Highways about the roadworks.

Mr MacCleary said: “I know many residents, commuters and businesses have faced unacceptable delays today as a result of these works on the A27.

“My office has been in contact with National Highways, and I welcome their decision to send additional resources to assess whether changes can be made to the current traffic management arrangements, including the frequency of traffic light changes, to help improve traffic flow.

“We are also seeking urgent clarification on the nature of the works being carried out, how long they are expected to continue, and what further steps can be taken to minimise disruption.

“I will continue to press the relevant organisations for answers and updates on behalf of local residents.”

Earlier on Thursday, traffic was reportedly queuing nearly four miles back on the Polegate Bypass, while queues of more than a mile were also reported in Eastbourne Road.
