A27 roadworks near Chichester to cause year-long disruption with overnight closures

Drivers are being warned of major, long-term disruption on a key route near Chichester, with roadworks on the A27 set to last for around a year.

National Highways – which has responsibility for the A27 – has confirmed that a series of temporary traffic restrictions will be introduced to allow for significant junction improvement works at the Temple Bar Interchange (A285).

The project is expected to run for approximately 12 months.

As part of the works, both carriageways of the A27 will be closed overnight between the exit and entry slip roads at the interchange. All slip roads at the junction will also be shut during these closures. In addition, a reduced speed limit of 50mph will be enforced 24 hours a day along the affected section.

The works are due to begin on or after Monday, May 4. Overnight closures will generally take place between 9pm and 6am, though timings may vary depending on construction progress.

National Highways says the measures are necessary to allow contractors to carry out the improvements safely and to boost long-term road safety in the area.

During closures, drivers will be diverted off the A27 at the Temple Bar Interchange and guided along alternative routes before re-joining the road. Clearly marked diversion signs will be in place throughout the project.

The legal order enabling the restrictions comes into force on May 2, 2026 and can remain in place for up to 18 months. However, the bulk of the disruption is expected to last for around a year while the main construction work is carried out.

Motorists are being urged to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys, particularly overnight, as the extended duration of the works is likely to have a sustained impact on travel in the area.
