The Government has issued a flood alert for the area that includes the River Adur and tributaries from Burgess Hill to Henfield.

The alert, which was updated at 9.50am, said flooding is ‘possible’ on Thursday, December 18, from 8pm ‘as 20-30mm of rainfall is forecast’.

People can get flood warnings by phone, text or email at www.gov.uk/get-flood-warnings.

The message said: “High river levels on Thursday may lead to flooding.”

It continued: “If as much rain falls as predicted, then flooding could affect the A281 at Mock Bridge, near Shermanbury. As well as extensive water in fields, flooding could also affect gardens of properties near Mock Bridge and may begin to approach buildings too. Rain is forecast throughout most of Thursday. Very little rain is forecast on Friday and over the weekend. River levels could peak higher than seen in early December 2025. River levels and flood risk should begin to reduce near Shermanbury by 12:00 on 19/12/2025.”

People are advised to not put themselves at risk and to avoid roads that flood, including the A281 at Mock Bridge.
