Barry Burks spent the last three years campaigning to connect the current stretches of footpath along the busy Worthing road to make it safer for pedestrians after his wife Jean was almost hit by a car in 2016.

When it seemed unlikely West Sussex County Council would be able to afford the path, quoting a cost of £1.2million, the retired electrical design engineer drew up his own plans for a fraction of the price – and the council adopted it.

On Sunday, October 11, Barry opened the path with Worthing mayor Lionel Harman, mayoress Karen Harman, county councillor Roger Elkins and Worthing Borough councillor Sean McDonald, who had helped Barry from the beginning.

The route runs adjacent to the Swallows Return pub, link to the entrance of the St Barnabas House hospice, continue north past the Greater Brighton Metropolitan College, through the adjacent recreation ground to the existing footpath by the play area.

Barry thanked all those involved for making the path a reality, including the county council, the borough council, and the Worthing Herald.

He said this would be ‘a great asset to the community and ensuring that life is much safer for whoever uses this footpath without the

risk of injury walking down the road’.

He added: “I wish to thank Landbuild who were the Contractor on behalf of West Sussex County Council for the way they carried out the construction of this footpath without too much disruption and were mindful of the local residents regarding access.”

Roger Elkins, West Sussex County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and infrastructure, said: “I’m delighted the County Council has been able to further invest in our highway network and fund the new footpath, which is approximately 450m long and runs adjacent to Titnore Lane.

“The new footpath supports our strategy to promote active travel and sustainable transport and connects the play area south of Titnore Way, past Northbrook Cottages and St Barnabas House to the existing footpaths adjacent to the Northbrook Metropolitan College.

“It has been well-received and our Highways team and contractor, Landbuild Ltd, worked closely with the community to try to meet local needs.”
