M23 near Gatwick reopens following fatal collision

The M23 near Gatwick Airport has reopened following a fatal collision.

Emergency services were called shortly before 1am this morning (July 8) to a collision ‘between a van and a highways worker’ on the southbound carriageway at Junction 9.

A highways worker, a 65-year-old man from Kent, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sussex Police said it was managing traffic on the M23 southbound at Junction 9 following the incident.

A Sussex Police spokesperson said: “The southbound carriageway is likely to be closed all morning following the collision, which happened before 1am.

“Diversions are in place and motorists are encouraged to plan alternative routes.”

But, in an update posted on Twitter at 2.35pm, National Highways confirmed the motorway had reopened.

A spokesperson said: “The #M23 by @Gatwick_Airport is now open southbound between J8 #M25 junction & J10 #Crawley.

“Currently, no significant delays on approach.”
