Main road to Gatwick Airport reopens following collision – but motorists told to expect ‘long delays’

The main road to Gatwick Airport has reopened following a collision – but motorists have been told to expect ‘long delays’.

A post on the AA’s website said: “Queueing traffic due to earlier crash, a car and a lamp post involved on A23 Airport Way Northbound from M23 J9A (Gatwick South terminal roundabout) to North Terminal Approach (Airport Way Roundabout).

“Congestion to the M23 (J9) Gatwick Airport.”

Posting on Twitter at 4.01pm, a spokesperson for National Highways said: “The #M23 Gatwick Spur is currently closed between the South Terminal and North Terminal following a traffic collision. @Gatwick_Airport

“Emergency services and recovery teams are working to clear the incident and get traffic moving again.

“Expect long delays on the approach.”

But in a later update on Twitter at 4.26pm, National Highways confirmed the road had reopened.

A spokesperson said: “The #M23 Gatwick Spur has reopened between the South Terminal and North Terminal following a traffic collision. @Gatwick_Airport

“Expect long delays on the approach while congestion clears.”

Also posting on Twitter, a spokesperson for London Gatwick said: “Following a traffic incident on Airport Way earlier today, the road has now reopened.

“We worked closely with our partners to support the response and safely restore access as quickly as possible.

“Any residual disruption is expected to ease as traffic flows return to normal.”
