Paralysed motocross man in race against time for life-changing op

Darren Jones narrowly avoided death when he broke his neck in three places following the incident on August 5 last year.

It left the 35-year-old, who now lives in Shoreham, completely paralysed in all four limbs.

The motorbike enthusiast spent ten months in a specialist spinal injury hospital in Aylesbury.

While he has some movement in his arms he has very little power and his hands do not function at all.

But Darren’s supportive family has tracked down a surgeon in Australia who is pioneering a procedure which will put some feeling back into his arms and hands by re-routing nerves.

However, the operation comes with a price tag of £50,000 and Darren must undergo the procedure by November before the nerves in his arm die.

“This will make a huge difference to his independence,” said Darren’s sister Leigh-Anne Jones.

“Darren will be able to do everyday things you and I take for granted.

“Before the accident Darren led a very sportive, active lifestyle but he now needs a 24 hour carer, this operation gives Darren the opportunity to regain some of his life back and more importantly his independence.’’

She said without the operation Darren will be left permanently paralysed. “We are trying to do everything we can to raise the money,” she continued.

“My brother is the most amazing man I know, he would be there for anyone if anyone ever needed him and now I’m hoping we can return the favour by getting him this potentially life changing operation.”

The motocross world has pulled together to support Darren.

An event is being held at Golding Barn Raceway in Upper Beeding on Sunday October 20.

Riders will be charged the usual £30 to ride and there will be an auction and a raffle.

Leigh-Anne added: “The motocross world have been phenomenal.

“We really can’t thank them all enough.”
