As of 12pm, traffic had been released on the M25 anticlockwise.

National Highways confirmed there had been a ‘resultant spillage’, after the vehicle fire.

The government agency added: “Lane one and two are closed whilst lane three and four are closed for service providers to assess the road damages. We'll keep you posted.”

A further update, around 1.30pm, read: “Lanes one and two remain closed due to the spillage, while lanes three and four are open and traffic is passing scene.

“Delays of 30 minutes are being reported, with approximately three miles of congestion. Please allow extra time if you're travelling in the area.”

All lanes had reopened by 2pm.

However, there remained ‘residual delays’ of ten mins – and ‘one mile of congestion on the approach’, National Highways said. It added: “Have a safe onward journey.”

According to AA Traffic News, the incident happened between junction 9 for Leatherhead and junction 8 for Reigate.

Traffic was reported to have come to a standstill shortly after 11am.

Drivers were said to be facing delays in the area, with the road blocked due to the fire.
