Pedestrianisation works 'to be completed by end of the month', Eastbourne BID confirms
Pedestrianisation works are to be ‘completed by end of the month’, Eastbourne Business Improvement District (BID) has confirmed.
The seafront-end of Terminus Road work will be completed by the end of January, it said.
The joint project between Eastbourne Borough Council (EBC) and East Sussex County Council (ESCC) was made possible with a £19.8 million grant from the government’s Levelling Up Fund. According to the two authorities, the project will see the road transformed into a ‘more attractive and vibrant destination for everyone to enjoy’, with al fresco dining, new paving, street furniture and newly-planted trees and flowers.
An Eastbourne BID statement said: “Works at Victoria Place are nearing completion, with the pedestrianised area due to finish by the end of the month.
"Over the coming months, new street furniture, awnings, planters, lighting, CCTV, an entrance arch and public artwork will be installed, funded by the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund.
"The next phase, from Bankers Corner to Bolton Road, is scheduled to finish before summer.
"While this investment is needed, we recognise it’s a challenging time for nearby businesses that remain open.
"If you are able to visit, please continue to support them during the works.
"When complete the area will be better for everyone.”
Cllr Claire Dowling, East Sussex County Council’s lead member for transport and environment, said: “As well as creating a safer and healthier town centre, encouraging visitors and boosting the economy, the work we are doing will also support our efforts to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality.
“The town centre has already benefited from extensive work carried out over the past few years and this latest phase of the scheme, which includes further pedestrianisation of Terminus Road, will add to the improvements already made and make it safer and easier for pedestrians and those using wheelchairs and other mobility aids.”
Phase 1 work was completed in 2019 around Eastbourne Station, part of Terminus Road, Cornfield Road and Gildredge Road, as well as the ongoing work around Victoria Place.
