Weeks of disruption ahead as work begins on main road serving Worthing railway station

Temporary traffic lights are in place as weeks of work begin on roads around Worthing railway station.

SGN has been working on the gas network in and around Victoria Road since October and the project is expected to continue into April.

The southern section of South Farm Road was closed on Sunday, January 4, and will remain closed for a week.

Traffic is able to go south over the level crossing but cannot continue to the roundabout at the junction with Teville Road, instead having to use Cross Street east or Orme Road west.

Temporary traffic lights are in use in Teville Road and Tarring Road, causing delays to buses accessing Worthing railway station.

Teville Road is the main road serving Worthing railway station and Morrisons' service yard, and the next phase of the project will mean it will be closed in sections for essential gas works from January 12 for 14 weeks.

SGN said: "This work is crucial to keep the gas flowing safely to homes and businesses in the area for years to come.

"Due to the location of the pipe in the road and for everyone’s safety, we will need to have road closures and traffic management measures in place.

"Bus routes will be disrupted with limited service at times – we’d advise passengers to contact their service provider for the latest updates."

Phase one has seen Victoria Road closed in sections since Monday, October 27, with works due to last for 14 weeks.

For the first two weeks, two-way traffic lights were used to allow for Hemiko completing its works on the Worthing Heat Network in Richmond Road, and to allow buses access along Victoria Road to the railway station.

Victoria Road remains closed at the Richmond Road end, with access to properties maintained.

Phase two will begin in Teville Road on Monday, January 12, for 14 weeks, in three short sections.

Section one will see Teville Road closed to through traffic from the roundabout junction at Tarring Road to Victoria Road.

Section two will see Teville Road closed to through traffic past the junction of Victoria Road to the junction of Oxford Road.

Section three will mean Teville Road is closed from past Oxford Road to the roundabout joining the A24, at the south end of Broadwater Bridge.

SGN said: "The road closures will mean no through vehicle access along Teville Road between the A24 roundabout and Tarring Road roundabout.

"Vehicle access to properties and businesses will be maintained via signed diversion routes and local access arrangements in place as access will change as works progress – residents and businesses affected will be kept informed about these arrangements.

"Bin collection days will remain unchanged, unless you are informed otherwise by your service provider.

"We’re sorry for the inconvenience this work will cause, and thank local people for their patience and understanding."
