Tributes paid to special constable Ken

Tributes have been paid to a special constable, dubbed 'a knight in shining armour' by his colleagues, who passed away last Friday (July 23).

Ken Smith, 53, was found collapsed near his pushbike on the A28 at Westfield, near the junction with Mill Lane, at 2pm.

A passer-by called an ambulance, but paramedics were unable to resuscitate him and he was declared dead at the Conquest Hospital in Hastings.

Mr Smith, who lived in Heathlands in Westfield, was described as a great family man, married to Hazel, with two children and grandchildren.

He worked for housing provider AmicusHorizon for almost two decades and was a familiar face to many as he loved walking in the local area and taking his dog out for walks.

He had been a special constable for just over eight years, working mainly in the Battle and Rye areas.

Inspector James Scott, from the Rother neighbourhood policing team, said: "We are devastated by the news of Ken's death.

"He had a reputation for always being available and local response sergeants knew that if they were strapped for resources, Ken would appear like a knight in shining armour to save the day."

Battle police sergeant Dan Russell said: "Ken, in these eight years, gave tremendous support to Rother Police and his community.

"He worked many volunteer hours on a weekly basis, keeping members of the public safe.

"He was enthusiastic, committed and had a great sense of humour.

"He cared about everybody and gave so much to so many people.

"His sudden passing has been greatly felt and he leaves a gap in our lives that will never be filled.

"Our thoughts and prayers are especially with his family at this time."

A spokesperson for AmicusHorizon said: "Ken had worked for us for almost 20 years and was a valued and supportive colleague.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends, and with those who worked closely with him.

"He will be sadly missed as a valued member of our team."
