Richard Everitt, a playwright and volunteer who runs a weekly drama workshop at L'Arche, said: "Michael was a colourful and vibrant character.

"What I learned most from him was his amazing capacity to walk into people's lives and make friends."

The leader of Mike's house, Sergio Acuna, stated: "He was a very extrovert person '“ the life and soul of the community. He was also attentive to people's needs and was particularly supportive of Jeremy, one of the other residents, who often needed extra help.

"He could be difficult at times, though he was very open and welcoming to new people."

Mike had many interests and activities. He played the Big Bad Wolf in the L'Arche panto, Little Red Riding Hood.

He was also an active member of St Wilfrid's Church and prayed regularly for the priests in the Catholic and Anglican church.

One of Mike's pictures on brotherhood was used as part of the recent service for the week of Christian unity, which was led by the L'Arche community.

He enjoyed dancing and prided himself on his stylish appearance. Fancy ties and shirts were a special fondness.
