Fishermen in the town have been amazed by yet another extraordinary catch in the sea just five miles south of Littlehampton’s shoreline.

The pair of turbots, described as a “once-in-a-lifetime” haul, weighed 7.5kg (16lb 8oz) and 6.5kg (14lb 4oz).

They were taken to Browns Sea Foods, on the Riverside Industrial Estate, where manager Jay Hunter was clearly astonished.

Jay, 37, who has worked in the fish industry for more than 20 years, said: “In all the years I have worked here it would be a rare sight to see one turbot of this size in a year’s worth of local catches and this week we have had two fish in.”

The largest fish was caught by Littlehampton fisherman Daniel Stevens on his boat Charlie Girl, while the second was landed by the crew of another of the town’s vessels, the Shannon.

Jay added: “I was amazed to see one of these fish, so two fish, one after the other, was doubly amazing.”

The turbot have since been sold to nearby restaurants.
