Udimore

Richard Holmes, Beauchamps

A large congregation attended our Remembrance Sunday service in St Mary’s, the first in Udimore for many years. We are very grateful to Revd John Lee for his initiative in reintroducing this separate service for Udimore and for conducting it himself so well. In his address he spoke of those who have worked for reconciliation, mentioning in particular the often forgotten work of chaplains to the armed services. There were several readers, representing a range of generations, and the organ-playing was again very competently shared by Rosemary Crouch and Liz Turgoose. For his reading of the Roll of Honour, Colin Knight had been able to find out the Christian names of all the men who gave their lives, and the regiment (or ship) in which each of them served, with one exception: if anyone happens to know this information about Fred Beeching (who died in World War II) please let Colin know (01424 883246). He would also be interested to hear about anyone from Udimore who lost his (or her) life in any armed conflict since August 1945. The retiring collection, for the current work of the Red Cross in the terrible Philippines disaster, amounted to just over £120.

The service in St Mary’s at 11.15 am this Sunday will be the Parish Eucharist.

Next Tuesday, November 20, between 2 and 3 pm, there will be a second ‘flu inoculation session at the Broad Oak Surgery, for any patients who missed the first session last month.

Also on Tuesday, at 6.30 pm in St Mary’s Community Hall, there will be a meeting of the Udimore Parish Council. Your support is always appreciated!

Nadia Florence-Marshall, a member of the Hall management committee, has asked me to let you know how grateful the committee has been to Ann Barker for nobly organizing annual coffee mornings at Stocks Oast, raising hundreds of pounds for the Hall. There have been scrumptious home-made biscuits and cakes, and raffles, including among their prizes whole frozen lambs (presented by Richard and Sheila Corke). These funds have paid for the special shelving recently installed in the store area (a great help in keeping everything in order) and will help to pay for new flooring in the bar.

For functions in the bar the committee also needs a fridge. If you have a fridge in good working order which you are replacing with a new one, please call Nadia (01424 882948) or Frank Langrish (01424 882250).
