This morning (Friday) please don’t forget the Macmillan Coffee Morning, between 10am and noon, in St Mary’s Community Hall - an opportunity to bring and buy all sorts of home-made, hand-made and home-grown goodies, enjoy a hot drink and some social chat, and at the same time help to raise funds for this hugely deserving charity, which does such good work for cancer patients and their families throughout the UK.

I wasn’t able to be present at the Parish Council meeting in the Hall on Wednesday evening last week, but I’m very grateful to Barbara Balkham, the Parish Clerk, for letting me have sight of her draft minutes of the meeting. In a series of letters (as reported in this column on July 27) the Council had made a number of recommendations to ESCC for safety improvements to B2089 and Float and Dumbwoman’s lanes. Councillors were now dissatisfied that there had been a long delay in dealing with most of these issues. Cllr Leahy reported that good progress is being made in implementing the various sections of the Local Action Plan. Representing ESCC, Cllr Maynard reported that, after a thorough review of services, it now seems likely that the necessary 15% cut in overall council expenditure can now be met.

The Parish Council will next meet on November 14, and then on January 16 and March 13, 2013.

Thanks to many donations, and good public support, the Overseas Group Jumble Sale in the Hall last Saturday went very well, raising £300 for the three missionary charities supported by the group. A fine effort by everyone involved!

Next Wednesday, October 3, from 7 till 8.30pm in the Hall, Elaine Fletcher’s yoga class is open both to current members and to new recruits, whatever their levels of experience and ability. The cost is £7 per session. If you are thinking of joining and would like more details please ring Elaine (01797 224682) - or simply go along on Wednesday evening and give it a try.

At the time of writing, Ann Barker (01424 883515) still had a few tickets available for the annual Harvest Supper, in the Hall at 7pm next Friday, October 5. They cost £12, all profits from the event to be divided between WaterAid and current church funds.

Please make a note in your diaries that the following week, on Saturday October 13, between 3 and 5pm in the Hall, there will be an event which should appeal to everyone who has an interest in the history of our village. Entitled “All Our Yesterdays”, it will be an afternoon during which many residents and former residents will be invited to share with us their recollections and reminiscences of Udimore in years gone by - a tea party with a difference! Many village photos and the WI book will be on display too. The event is being arranged by the Friends of St Mary’s: the £5 entry fee (to include tea) will go towards their fund for the maintenance and repair of our beautiful church.
