Rother flies the flagfrom town hall forthe Commonwealth

ROTHER District Council joined councils from across the UK to fly the Commonwealth flag as part of a of an international initiative to celebrate the ‘global family’ of nations.

The flag was raised at Bexhill Town Hall on Monday by Cllr Ian Jenkins, district council chairman, accompanied by Cllr Frances Winterborn, mayor of Bexhill, to mark Commonwealth Day.

The flag-raising was one of 500 taking place across the UK, with more ceremonies held around the world, in the first of what is intended to be an annual event held on the second Monday in March.

Before the flag was flown, the chairman read a message of good wishes from the Queen, along with the Commonwealth Affirmation.

Cllr Jenkins said: “I was proud to take part in the inaugural flag ceremony, which gave us a chance to join a global event to publicly affirm our support for the Commonwealth.

“This global family of nations allows countries to support each other in developing their economy while promoting a fair, diverse and equitable society.

“The flag-raising was about celebrating the Commonwealth and the shared values which bind us, such as respect, co-operation and understanding.”
