Unsolved violent crimes in Sussex to be '˜reopened' after Levi Bellfield's '˜confessions'

Bellfield finally admitted guilt for the rape and murder of schoolgirl Milly Dowler, and it was reportedly part of a number of confessions of other attacks on women and girls.

Bellfield work for a time in Chichester as a car clamper, and Sussex has been named as one of nine police forces considering reopening cold cases in the wake of the claims, revealed by Surrey Police.

According to the Guardian newspaper, the Metropolitan Police has ‘confirmed it was now liaising with a number of other forces regarding other criminal investigations amid reports Bellfield had also confessed to a range of other crimes’.

When the Observer contacted the Metropolitan police a spokesman would only say: “We are not making any comment to media organisations while investigations continue.”

The Guardian named Sussex along with Greater Manchester, Avon, Somerset and Lancashire as areas where Bellfield visited where forces are understood to be reviewing cases of violent attacks.

When Bellfield was convicted of Milly’s murder in June 2011 he was already serving life for the murders of two other women.

Detectives said Bellfield may have been responsible for around 20 unsolved attacks on women.
