Police closed the A24 southbound after a lorry struck a crash barrier and ruptured its fuel tank, spilling a large amount of diesel across the carriageway.

West Sussex County Council’s Highways Department has been working throughout the day to repair the damage and re-open the road, but due to its condition it will have to be resurfaced overnight.

Motorists are being advised to avoid the area and to seek alternative routes.
