UPDATE: Arundel town centre reopens after lorry freed

Police have reopened High Street, Arundel, after a lorry which was jammed against the side of a shop was freed by a tow truck.

The road through the town centre was closed for about 90 minutes after the truck hit the side of the Pallant of Arundel delicatessen while reversing to negotiate a narrow turn into a side street, Mill Lane, at about 11.15am today (Monday, November 19).

Brickwork on the shop’s corner with Town Square was damaged, but no one was hurt in the accident.

Police closed High Street to traffic and a large tow truck was brought in to move the lorry away from the damaged wall.

The shop was closed for a short time while the lorry was being freed, but otherwise continued to trade.

Mark Robinson, of Pallant of Arundel, was working in the shop’s office when the lorry hit the wall. He said: There was a rumbling noise, and it was obvious something had happened.

“Then one of the girls came from the shop and said a lorry had hit the corner.

“I’m surprised it’s not happened before. The road is very narrow there and these streets just aren’t built for the traffic we have today.”
