UPDATE: Police investigate injured teen for suspected cable theft

A TEENAGER who suffered severe burns when he suffered an electric shock is now being investigated for an alleged copper wire theft in Yapton, police announced today (Monday, June 10).

The 17-year-old, from Epsom, in Surrey, had suffered serious burns on Friday evening (June 7).

He was picked up by a passing firefighter along the A259 before being rushed to the Littlehampton fire station in Maltravers Road, where he was given emergency first aid at about 5.30pm.

The injured boy was then airlifted from Caffyn’s Field, Littlehampton, to the special burns unit at Chelmsford Hospital in Essex where he is said to be in a ‘critical but stable condition’.

A spokeswoman from Sussex Police today confirmed an investigation had been launched into the theft of copper cable from an electrical substation, in Bilsham Road, Yapton.

Detective Sergeant Sally Arbuckle said: “This young boy has suffered horrific injuries in what we believe is an attempt to steal cables from electrical substation. Substations are extremely dangerous places and should never be entered.”

The force is appealing for anyone who was near the substation or who may have any information about the incident is urged to call police on 101 quoting serial 1192 of 7/6.
