UPDATE: Police say Loxwood body is woman in her 60s

DETECTIVES are working to establish how a body ended up in the Wey and Arun canal after it was discovered this morning (May 21).

Police confirmed the body was of a woman in her 60s from the Loxwood area.

“At this stage the death is not being treated as suspicious,” said a spokesman from the police.

Six members of the technical rescue unit at West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service are at the scene currently recovering the body and the canal is closed until further notice.

Sussex Police CID is also at the scene of the discovery, in the lock near the Onslow Arms pub.

Emergency services were called at 9.30am.
