Van Owners Warned - Be Vigilant

Van owners are being warned not to leave expensive tools in vehicles overnight.

They are also being asked to ensure tools are security-marked in a bid to deter thieves.

This follows a number of recent crimes across East Sussex when thieves have stolen a wide range of power tools by breaking into vehicles.

The thefts mostly take place at night and have covered a wide area, covering all five districts (Eastbourne, Hastings, Lewes, Rother and Wealden).

Sussex Police are currently investigating this spate of tool thefts, and are using a variety of tactics including specially equipped bait vehicles to target criminals and catch them in the act.

The police are advising workmen to lock vans and take their tools with them. In addition they should display a notice saying that all tools have been removed. If it is not practical to remove all items, fit the van with supplementary locks to the access doors. Engrave all tools with a unique identifiable number, for example the post code, and try to park in well lit spot.

Superintendent Grenville Wilson, Neighbourhood Policing, East Sussex Division, said: "These thefts are bringing misery to many tradesman and we would ask van owners to help themselves by stepping up their vehicle security. Also if anyone knows of anybody trading in stolen tools they should contact us or Crimestoppers anonymously."
