Vandals damage offices

SENSELESS yobs destroyed an ancient set of leaded windows at The Inglenook offices of Hailsham Town Council at the weekend.

Four such windows at the side of the listed 16th Century building were smashed by the vandals, plus one small window in the front of the mayor's parlour and two large modern windows in front of the offices.

A crystal vase awarded to the town council for its floral displays in the Hailsham In Bloom competition 2001 and 2002 was also smashed.

'It's just pure, mindless vandalism,' said town clerk Liz Jones. 'There's no way anyone could fit through those windows anyway, so it's not like they were trying to break in. Besides, there's nothing of value on the premises.

'It's a great shame these windows are broken because they were like part of the original building although I'm sure they were replaced at some stage in the distant past. We will have to get a specialist in to have them redone.'

Nothing was taken from the offices and no one seems to have entered, probably thanks to the small size of the windows. It is not yet known how much the windows and vase will cost to replace.
