Veal farm awarded for contribution to animal welfare

A small farm in Sedlescombe has received an award for raising free-range veal. Amanda Pollard, owner of the business called ‘Veal from the Field’ said, ‘Bull calves born to dairy cows usually have no commercial value in farming. Over 100,000 are culled at birth and an additional 11,000 transported at a few weeks old to the continent to be raised as veal. We source our bull calves from local dairy farms and raise them in small herds with free access to pasture during the day. Veal raised in crates has traditionally been rejected by the British public and rightly so, but things are changing and properly raised veal needs to go back on the menu. Dairy bull calves deserve a better deal.’

Compassion in World Farming announced recently that Veal from the Field has been awarded a Good Calf Commendation by Compassion in World Farming in recognition of its commitment to farm animal welfare.

Compassion’s Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards recognise food companies across Europe that are making it their policy to produce and source higher welfare eggs, meat and dairy produce.
