VIDEO: Concerns as boards go up at historic Horsham site

The future of Prewetts Mill, in Worthing Road, has been heavily discussed over the past few months after developer McCarthy & Stone announced an interested in redeveloping the site back in October.

The company, which provides privately owned retirement properties, along with Somerset Care, which offers residential and nursing care for older people, said they were looking to turn the old building into assisted living accommodation with extra care facilities for people aged 70 and over.

The project, labelled ‘Your life’, would create 57 new one and two-bedroom flats including a lounge area for residents, a restaurant and laundry facilities.

But some residents are against the proposals and were concerned work had already begun on the site without the public being informed.

A spokesperson for McCarthy & Stone said the boards had been put up at the request of the owner and currently no planning application had been submitted for the redevelopment of the site.

The company said:“The boarding has been put up at the request of the vendor.

“Police have had a few complaints about attempted break-ins and reports of anti-social behaviour in the area.

“We are not starting work on the site as a planning application has not been submitted.”

They added: “It is all still progressing since the exhibition and we are taking on the feedback we received.

“The planning application will be submitted in the new year but we haven’t got a date.

“Once the application has been submitted we will contact the public and they will have a chance to comment on the application.”
