VIDEO: County council urged to ‘get a grip’ over Horsham potholes

Michael Cross, 71, said the county council marked potholes in Springfield Crescent, where he lives, and Springfield Park Road two years ago, but have not made progress since.

He said: “They give us hope by inspecting it and marking it up for repair, and then they don’t do anything - they need to get a grip.

“You can come down here and fix this in a day-and-a-half. If they did it properly it would be fixed for a few years.

“For cyclists these are particularly dangerous because you lose traction and it can throw you off line and into the path of oncoming vehicles.”

Mr Cross, who s a cyclist, explained how markings made around the problem potholes two years ago are still visible now and have not been acted on by the county council.

He said: “My car has a mark on the tyre, and we are confident it has been made by driving backwards and forwards here.

“It is dangerous because of the proximity of the vehicles passing the parked vehicles.

“I did get a response from (Horsham district councillor) Christine Costin, who passed it on to someone else in the council, and she said it was dangerous. But I haven’t heard anything more.”

Mrs Costin (LDem, Trafalgar) said that concerned residents should continue reporting problems caused by potholes.

She said: “The trouble is when you get Springfield Crescent there is not much traffic going down it, so it might not get the same amount of complaints.

“It is dangerous for cyclists and obviously pretty grim for cars that get caught up in it - it is awful.”

A spokesperson for West Sussex County Council said: “We are aware of potholes at both locations.

“Patching works to fix these are planned although a date has not yet been set.”

The council says that when a pothole is severe enough to present a serious safety issue it will be repaired within two hours.

And potholes greater than 100mm deep will be repaired in five working days.
