VIDEO: Elderly residents evacuated from retirement flats after Selsey caravan fire

RESIDENTS had to be evacuated from Selsey retirement flats next to a burning caravan last night (October 12).

The caravan was close to a corner of The Rookery, in East Beach Road, when it caught light around 10.30pm.

Firefighters confirmed the blaze started accidentally.

Max Gilligan, of the Selsey Lifeboat crew, took the above video showing the aftermath of the fire.

He said some residents were evacuated as the burning caravan was near the building.

The building is owned by Affinity Sutton. The Observer has contacted the housing association this morning (October 13) but no one has been available for comment.

One man was treated at the scene for mild smoke inhalation but otherwise no one was harmed.

The fire service said this morning a number of call dialled 999 last night, with crews from Selsey and Chichester called to the caravan, which was completely destroyed.

Firefighters checked over The Rookery using thermal imaging cameras but there were no signs. They left the scene around 12.30am.
