A mysterious nest had appeared over the weekend at St Catherine’s Catholic Primary School, in Highdown Drive.

Head teacher Gill Askham said she had contacted the fire brigade but they were busy on a call, so premises officer Garry Seex was sent up to investigate.

He brought the giant egg down, wrapped it in a blanket and placed it in the school hall in front of children and parents.

Mrs Askham showed everyone an email she had received from the National Museum for Strange Objects about ‘the unusual discovery’ at the school.

It requested a detailed account of the circumstances surrounding the discovery and Mrs Askham said that would be the children’s job, as they saw the egg first.

“We want to inspire everyone to write, boys and girls, and all abilities,” she explained.

“The children will be writing reports and poems. We just want to get their creative juices going.”

The egg discovery launched creative writing week at St Catherine’s, involving all year groups.

As the children returned to their classrooms, a fire engine arrived at the school and they were called outside to witness the removal of the nest.
