VIDEO: Horsham’s Eurovision busker hits the headlines in Finland

Within days of Danny McEvoy posting a cover of the Finnish entry on his You Tube page last week, the video had notched up more than 100,000 views and he was featured in two of the country’s national tabloid newspapers.

He said: “I’ve had a few of the artists post up links of my version on their own Facebook pages and that usually results in a few thousand views, but this one has gone ballistic.

“What’s fun about it is I performed it in Finnish. I listened to it and phonetically wrote out the lyrics - taking it and Anglicising it and singing it.

“They must think it’s funny because I’m a Brit singing Finnish.”

Danny, who often performs in Horsham town centre, sets himself a video project each year posting songs on his You Tube channel, ‘The Walrus was Danny’.

This year his challenge is to post his version of each of the Eurovision song entries as they are released ahead of the contest in May.

The father of one said: “I see it as my Everest to climb. I sang the Beatles’ hits in 2010, the next year the UK top three hits of the 60s, the next year the 70s and the next year the 80s.

“This year I’m doing the top one to three of the 90s, the top four and five of the 70s and Eurovision.

“My dream is to write and perform for the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest.”

When asked if he was going to carry on with every Eurovision song he said: “I’ve started so I’ll Finnish.”

The original Finnish entry is by punk band called Pertti Kurikan Nimipaivat (PKN) whose members have learning disabilities. They are applying to perform at the Eurovision Song Contest in a bid to raise awareness of autism and Down’s Syndrome.

Danny’s video projects and all the Eurovision song entries are on his You Tube page, which has had more than three million views.
