The youth was trapped at the Medmerry Nature Reserve and the coastguard ordered both the in-shore and all-weather lifeboats to the scene last Thursday (August 6).

“The in-shore life boat was able to get close the entrance and spotted the boy inside the inlet on the western side,” said Max Gilligan from the Selsey lifeboat.

“The helmsman decided to enter the reserve to evacuate the boy as there was a risk he would try to swim across. With the tide ebbing there was a considerable amount of water rushing back out to the sea estimated at five-to-six knots.”

After being called at 7.24pm, the boy was recovered at 7.42pm by the in-shore lifeboat and because of the tide the helsman headed back out to open water.

Both lifeboats returned to the station at 8pm and were rehoused immediately.
