The Macmillan Horizon Centre, opposite the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, opened its doors to the public in November.

It’s a one stop shop for cancer patients to receive support and advice as they go through treatment.

Michaela Rossmann, Horizon Centre volunteer co-ordination and support services manager, said: “We are pleased that what we are offering at the centre is right for people affected by cancer. We have had a great response from therapists willing to offer their time and their help and support.

“But we need to increase our capacity as the demand grows to support people through their cancer treatment and the consequences of their treatment.”

The centre offers a range of complementary therapies including massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, acupuncture and more.

Ms Rossmann said: “All we are asking is that people can give up half a day a month to volunteer at the centre. In return we offer them training which broadens their skills and experience.”

Volunteers are offered a one-day cancer awareness course and a one-day listening and responding course. An oncology complementary therapist is also providing a custom-designed and tailored programme.

Complementary therapist Chris Penny who volunteers at the centre said: “I get such a lot out of volunteering at the Horizon Centre. It’s so rewarding to work here. To see the impact you can have on someone who may not be able to help themselves is incredible. I have some amazing patients and if I could bottle up the feeling it gives you I would. It’s infectious. I agreed to one afternoon a month tentatively and now I’m seriously considering doing more.”

Ms Rossmann said: “We provide all the materials and products. We do ask that they have their own insurance. It might be that some complementary therapists can offer their time in an evening - which is exactly what we’d like to offer so that we can extend our support to people who work who can’t come during working hours.”

If you are a complementary therapist who is willing to give up at least half a day a month please contact Michaela on 01273 468770 or email [email protected]
