Wacky fun as oddball cars race at Eastergate school summer fete

Penelope Pitstop and Peter Perfect were revived at Eastergate Primary School's summer fete.

It was more a case of Wacky Races than Formula One when the event's motorsport feature got under way.

Sixteen of the most bizarre forms of transport were on the starting grid. They included an elephant on four wheels as well as a giant bee.

Spectators lined the route in the school grounds off Church Lane as categories of drivers from four-year-olds to a gran tested their skills, or lack of them. Collisions were frequent along with bursts of laughter as fun per minute replaced revs per minute.

The wackiest machine, the best-engineered and the most-fun machines won prizes.

The winning drivers received garlands and medals in true champions' style.

The attraction of the races was just one part of the most successful fete the school has held. Some 3,000 is expected to have been raised.

Most of the money will go towards providing a stage for the school hall. A sensory garden is also being created in the grounds.

The school's Friends group, led by co-ordinator Diane Green, organised the day. She said: "It was a beautiful summer's day and everyone had a lovely time."

Four-legged transport was provided by Smudge the Shetland pony and his trap. A crockery stall gave visitors the chance to smash some plates and feel good.

Skittles and quoits were among the amusements for the younger visitors.
