SPRING FORWARD: Tomorrow night is the last Saturday of March and the night on which we put our clocks forward one hour. It means losing an hour's sleep but don't forget to adjust your clock or you could miss Easter Sunday services.

EASTER: Today is Good Friday. At 11am there will be a Walk of Witness from Union Church Heathfield, followed by an Hour’s Devotion at St Bartholomew’s at noon. There will be a walk from St Bart’s starting at 1pm to All Saints’ followed by an Hour’s Devotion beginning there at 2pm.

EASTER DAY: The first Eucharist of Easter will be at St Bartholomew’s at 8am followed by breakfast. The Festival Parish Eucharist will be at All Saints’ at 10am followed by canapés and fizz. Everyone welcome. I’ve never quite grasped why Easter is such a moveable feast, so I looked it up this year. As laid down by the Council of Nicaea in 325, Easter Day is the first Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon, which happens on the day of the vernal equinox, that is, March 21 or any of the following 28 days. (I hope you’re keeping up). It means that Easter Day can be as early as March 22 but no later than April 25. Every now and again there is a suggestion that the date for Easter should be fixed, but the weight of history probably means that you shouldn’t hold your breath...Whatever the date, it is the day on which Christians celebrate the risen Christ and His defeat of death. We give each other eggs as a symbol of new life and the Resurrection. Happy Easter.

EGG HUNT: And speaking of eggs, there will be an Easter Egg hunt for children in the pub garden on Sunday.

SPRING CLEANING: It may still be chilly but the welcome sun streaming through my windows is telling me it’s about time I cleaned them. This is also the time when anyone with an hour or so spare can volunteer to help in the Great Church Spring-Clean. As both buildings are still decorated for Easter (look out especially for the lovely display of Easter Lilies) it has been decided to delay the spring clean until Saturday April 9. If you’d like to help then, please turn up with mops and buckets (as well as your marigolds) between 9.30am and 1pm at either church to help give the buildings a good clean, reaching the parts that can’t usually be reached during the regular fortnightly cleaning. Your efforts will be rewarded by grateful thanks all round as well as tea, coffee and cake or biscuits.
