War shelter found

DON'T panic Mr Mainwaring! an underground air raid shelter has been discovered at Lancing Beach Green.

The bunker was found on Thursday by Adur Watch inspector Graham Gunn, after he saw some children playing near what appeared to be smoke coming out of the ground.

After parking his Land Rover between the children and the smoke he called for back-up.

The smoke came from burning rubbish in an underground bunker, which is an old air raid shelter dating back to World War Two.

The Fire Brigade put the fire out and the site has now been made safe. Adur Watch manager Clive Bramble said: "When I first arrived at Lancing Beach Green it was like a scene from a disaster movie.

"There was smoke coming out of the ground, the light was fading, it was windy, wet and cold. All I could see was the top half of the fire officer disappearing underground."

Graham added: "Typical, it always happens to me. I dread to think what my wife will say when she sees the state of my uniform."
