Wassailing evening in Arundel Museum

THOSE who like a sing and a drink are encouraged to take part in an evening of wassailing at Arundel Museum this month.

The traditional event takes place on Saturday, November 30, and will include singing by the Lyminster Choir, conducted by John Henville.

They will perform some traditional carols and there will also be a chance for visitors to join in with some old favourites.

Wassailing refers to an ancient ceremony that involves singing and drinking the health of trees to ensure a good harvest by awakening the cider apple trees and scaring away evil spirits.

The activities start at 5pm and will last for two hours.

The museum will be at its best, with a fine Christmas tree in the foyer, adorned with traditional decorations made especially for the occasion by local groups.

There will be mulled cider and apple-based foods, using interesting old recipes and there will also be a display on wassail as well as an exhibition on local agriculture in the jubilee room.
