WASTE PLAN CLEARS FINAL HURDLE

The Secretary of State has advised East Sussex County Council and Brighton & Hove City Council that the Waste Local Plan can be formally adopted without any further changes.

People who made written comments on the Plan during the various consultation stages will be written to and notified of the councils' adoption of the Plan.

The councils will also advertise their formal adoption of the Plan in the local newspapers.

The Plan sets out a new waste strategy which aims to reduce landfilling of untreated waste by increasing recycling and composting, and by recovering energy from residual waste. Applications for planning permission for new waste facilities will be assessed against the policies in the Plan.

It is envisaged that an incinerator will be built at North Quay, Newhaven.

A separate planning application has been made for this project.

It also includes a facility at Whitesmith to handle green waste.
