WEALDEN HOPES FADE FOR RE-OPENING OF RAIL LINK

WEALDEN S new MP has warned that hopes of a re-opening of the Lewes to Uckfield railway line could be kicked into touch by new operators Govia.

Charles Hendry said Govia should be questioned in depth about a study into the re-opening of the line.

He said: My concern is that Govia might undertake a feasibility study with the intention of showing that the re-opening of the line is unfeasible. I am not persuaded that it fits into their plans for the rail network and, in spite of the tremendous demand locally for the line to be re-opened, I suspect they are trying to kick the ball into touch.

He said it was vital that the Rail Passengers Committee got an assurance from Govia that their study would be full, balanced and open-minded.

Mr Hendry also criticised the service of out-going operator, Connex.

He said: It is unacceptable that at times people get off the East Grinstead train at Oxted, to be told that there is no driver to take the train to Uckfield, leaving them stranded for an hour.

And it is absurd that we do not have a Sunday service on the Uckfield line throughout the year. This is one of the main tourist areas in the South East and it should be possible for them to make their visit by train.

Govia will take over from Connexby the end of July.
