Weaning drivers away from cars

THE two-day Streets Ahead Festival starts in Lewes on Monday and hopes to wean drivers away from their cars and on to public transport.

To that end there will be a special free bus service on the 27 and 27A service all day next Saturday, September 22.

There will also be a free park and ride scheme operating across the town. A tented exhibition in the Cliffe pedestrian precinct will show how changing motorists habits and using cars more intelligently can protect the environment.

Proper servicing and careful checks on tyre pressure can save on petrol and is the green option for the environment.

A special workers week-long bus service will run from Eastbourne at 7.25am, beginning on Monday.

The X30 limited stop service takes just over an hour to arrive in Lewes at 8.30am. A return service will leave Lewes at 5.30pm.

The festival, funded by the county and district councils and sponsored by Harveys of Lewes and Owen Williams Consultants, is jointly organised by the councils and local organisations, including Friends of the Earth, Cycle Lewes and Lewes Chamber of Commerce.

Lead council cabinet member for transport and environment Cllr Anthony Reid said: We want people to know they can make a difference through their own actions.

Changes in habits, no matter how small, will all contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment, and together we can help to ensure that the natural environment we have today will still be enjoyed by generations to come .
