West Meads Community Centre marks 40th birthday

A good year has been reported to mark the 40th anniversary of West Meads Community Centre and Association.

The continued popularity of the building at the northern end of The Precinct sees it hosting activities all day long.

A report by the association's secretary, Audrey Scott, at its latest annual meeting showed how the venue is thriving. She outlined the improvements which had taken place at the centre in the past year. Among these was the installation of a new central heating system. Other projects are being considered.

The list of groups which meet in the centre comprises an A to W of Aldwick. It includes Aldwick Free Church's Thursday coffee mornings, Elim Pentecostal Church's services on Sunday mornings and an arts and crafts group whose members knitted 108 hats for premature babies in response to an appeal on TV's The Paul O'Grady Show. They are currently busy making hats for the Seamen's Mission.

Carpet bowls, duplicate bridge, patchwork and quilting, keep fit, gardening and a social club are among the other activities which take place there.

West Meads Residents' Association also uses the centre as a base with coffee mornings. A fete will take place at the neighbouring village green on June 27.

Aldwick Parish Council chairman Carol Wiseman used the meeting to update members about the effect on the estate of the proposed development on the other side of Chalcraft Lane.
